Is it safe?
This treatment is new in the United States but has been cleared by the FDA and is used in multiple medical facilities in the U.S. and Europe. Thousands of people have gone through the Calmare® Pain Therapy Treatments with literally no known adverse side-effects.

How many treatments will I need?
After your initial consultation our standard protocol is 10 treatments over a two week period. It is possible to have fewer treatments however, we have found that this number of treatments has proven to keep the pain away for the longest possible time-frame.

How long will my pain stay away?
Current data indicates that patients have an average duration of pain relief of one to three months, with the longest published no-pain period being one year. In nerve pain cases where tissue damage has been stabilized the therapy can permanently resolve the pain.

How quickly will I see results?
Many patients experience pain relief as early as 10 minutes into their first treatment session. As the number of treatment sessions increase, the duration of pain relief is prolonged.

Can I return for additional treatments? What happens after the effects of the treatment wear off?
Patients can be re-treated with the standard 10 treatment protocol if the pain completely returns. However, studies have shown that pain relief often can be maintained with a few intermittent “boost” treatments.

Is this device similar to a TENS unit?
No. The Calmare® MC-5A device creates a low energy electrical impulse which travels through the patients nerves delivering a “no-pain” signal to the brain. This “convinces” the brain that the area of pain is normal and eventually results in prolonged pain relief. TENS units use high energy electrical impulses to block pain signals or distract the brain but when discontinued provide no lasting pain relief.

Who cannot use the Calmare® Pain Therapy Treatments?
This device has not been cleared by the FDA for use in head pain, and cannot be used by people with a pacemaker, defibrillator or electrical implant to control pain. Patients who are using neuroleptic agents for pain such as Lyrica (Pregalbin), Neurontin (Gabapentin) or Amitriptyline (Elavil) may not experience the same amount of pain relief.

Will insurance cover the treatment?
This is a new and exciting therapy cleared by the FDA for use in the United States and provides a novel treatment option for those who suffer from chronic pain. Presently, the AMA has issued Category III CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code 0278T for Transcutaneous Electrical Modulation Pain Reprocessing which applies to the technology behind the Calmare MC 5A device.  Insurance companies are considering reimbursement on a case by case basis and Spero Pain Relief Therapy of Illinois will assist all covered patients in obtaining reimbursement. Additional information about this code is provided "here".

How do I pay for the treatment?
We currently accept payment by checks, debit or credit cards.
